Can window film be installed on the inside?

Yes — the vast majority of window film is fitted internally. Here's why, and when exterior film is used instead.

Yes — the great majority of architectural window film is installed on the inside surface of the glass. Interior installation is the norm because it's cleaner, more durable and easier, and it's why film is such a low-disruption upgrade.

Why interior is best

Fitted inside, the film is protected from rain, frost, wind and grime, so it lasts far longer — commonly 10–15+ years — and keeps its appearance. It's also applied in controlled, dry conditions, which gives a flawless finish, and it can be removed cleanly later. For the overwhelming majority of homes and offices, interior film is exactly right.

When exterior film is used

Occasionally the inside of the glass can't be accessed — sealed units in certain buildings, or specific structural situations — and then an exterior-grade film is fitted outside. Exterior films are engineered to withstand the weather but have shorter lifespans than interior films because they're exposed. We only use exterior film where interior isn't possible.

Does interior film still block heat and UV?

Absolutely — interior solar film rejects up to 79% of solar heat and blocks 99% of UV just the same. The film works on the light passing through the glass regardless of which surface it's on; interior simply protects the film itself.

The bottom line

Window film is normally installed inside, which makes it durable, clean to fit and removable — with exterior film reserved for the rare cases where the inside can't be reached. Book a survey and we'll confirm the right approach for your windows.
