What is low-e window film?

Low-e film reflects indoor heat back into the room in winter and cuts solar heat in summer. Here's how it helps year-round.

Low-emissivity — "low-e" — window film is designed to work at both ends of the year: it reflects a portion of your indoor heat back into the room in winter, while still cutting solar heat gain in summer. It's the closest film gets to an all-season upgrade.

What 'low-e' means

Emissivity is how readily a surface radiates heat. A low-e coating radiates less, so instead of your indoor warmth escaping through the glass, more of it is reflected back inside — reducing heat loss through the windows in cold weather.

Summer and winter benefit

In summer, low-e solar films reject solar heat like any solar film. In winter, the low-e property trims heat loss through large or older windows. It won't match good triple glazing, but on single-glazed or big-glazed rooms it takes the edge off both extremes.

Who it suits

Low-e film is worth considering for period homes with single glazing, rooms with a lot of glass that feel cold in winter and hot in summer, and anyone wanting a year-round rather than summer-only benefit.

The bottom line

Low-e window film reflects indoor heat back in winter and rejects solar heat in summer — a genuinely year-round option. Book a survey and we'll advise whether low-e is right for your glazing.
