— Solar & heat

Do north-facing rooms need window film?

Less for heat, but UV, privacy and glare can still apply. Here's when north-facing windows benefit.

North-facing rooms get the least direct sun, so they rarely have the overheating problem that drives south and west-facing installs. But that doesn't mean film has nothing to offer — UV, privacy and occasional glare can still make it worthwhile.

Heat: usually not the issue

Because north windows get little direct sun, solar heat gain is minimal — so a heavy solar film is usually unnecessary. We won't over-spec a north window just to make a sale.

UV still fades interiors

North-facing rooms still receive plenty of daylight and UV, which fades furnishings over time. A clear UV film protects the room without changing the look or reducing the (already limited) sunlight.

Privacy and glare

If a north-facing window is overlooked, privacy film applies just as it would anywhere. And reflected glare off nearby buildings or bright overcast skies can still bother screens — where it does, film helps.

The bottom line

North-facing rooms rarely need solar film for heat, but UV protection, privacy and glare control can still make film worthwhile. We'll give you honest advice on the survey — including where you don't need it.
