Window film vs window tint: what's the difference?

They're often the same thing — but 'tint' implies cars. Here's the terminology, and what architectural film really is.

"Window film" and "window tint" are often used to mean the same thing, which causes confusion. The important distinction for a homeowner or business is architectural (buildings) versus automotive (vehicles) — and we do architectural film only.

Same technology, different context

Both are thin films applied to glass to control heat, glare, UV and privacy. "Tint" is the word people associate with cars, where dark film is applied to vehicle windows. "Architectural" or "building" window film is the same broad technology applied to the glass in homes and commercial buildings.

Architectural film isn't just 'dark'

Automotive tint is usually about a dark look. Architectural film is far broader: near-clear solar films, mirrored privacy films, frosted films, safety films and more — chosen for performance and appearance, not just to darken glass.

We do buildings, not vehicles

To be clear: Window Tint Company installs architectural window film for residential and commercial buildings across Scotland. We don't tint vehicles — everything we do is for windows in homes and businesses.

The bottom line

Window film and window tint largely mean the same technology; what matters is that we specialise in architectural film for buildings, in a full range of clear, tinted, mirrored and frosted options. Book a survey to find the right one.
