Window film can reduce energy bills, and the savings come from two directions: less cooling in summer and, with low-emissivity films, less heat loss in winter.
Summer: less cooling
In buildings that use air-conditioning — offices, retail, some modern homes — solar control film reduces solar heat gain by up to 79%. That means the cooling system runs less to hold the same temperature, which shows up directly on the energy bill.
Winter: less heat loss
Low-emissivity (low-e) window films reflect a portion of internal heat back into the room rather than letting it escape through the glass. It's not a replacement for good glazing, but it takes the edge off heat loss through large windows.
The bigger win: comfort
Even where the pound-for-pound saving is modest, the comfort gain is large — rooms you couldn't use in summer become usable without buying and running a portable air-conditioner, which itself is a saving.
